Illustration of an archive of articles arranged in grouped cards

This is the whole archive. It is grouped by subject rather than by publication date, because almost nobody arrives at a site like this wanting the newest article — they arrive wanting the one that answers the thing they are stuck on. Reverse-chronological order is a filing system that serves the writer, not the reader.

The guides fall into five clusters, and they were written to be read in roughly the order listed inside each one. Where a piece assumes you have already done something else, it says so at the top rather than halfway down.

Getting a WordPress site live

The starting point for most readers. WordPress as a content management system explains what the software is and what it is good at before you commit to it. How to create a website using WordPress is the step-by-step build. Is WordPress a free CMS? deals with the question that trips up every first-time owner — the software is free, the things around it are not. And if you have decided to run your own server rather than use a managed host, installing WordPress on VPS hosting walks through it without assuming you have done it before.

Page builders, editors and themes

How a page gets laid out is the decision people revisit most often, usually after they have already built twenty pages the hard way. The Gutenberg block editor covers the editor that ships with WordPress itself. Elementor vs Gutenberg is the head-to-head, and it matters more than it looks: a builder decides how portable your content is if you ever change themes. The wider round-up of WordPress website builders covers the rest of the field, and the Astra theme review is a worked example of what to look for in any theme before you build on top of it.

Search engine optimization

Five pieces, best read in sequence. Keyword research tools is where the work starts, because writing before you know what people search for is guesswork. Creating an SEO-friendly WordPress website is the structural piece — headings, URLs, internal linking, speed. SEO plugins for WordPress and the closer look at the Yoast SEO plugin cover the tooling. Google core updates explains what a broad update is and, more usefully, what it is not; Google's own guidance on creating helpful content is the primary source behind most of that advice.

Choosing a content management system

If you have not picked a platform yet, start with the master list of top content management systems, then read the individual write-ups for whichever two are on your shortlist: Shopify, Joomla, Drupal or Squarespace. WordPress vs Shopify is the comparison people search for most, and WordPress for ecommerce makes the case for one side of it in detail. The CMS hub introduces all of them together.

Tracking and integration

The technical odds and ends that every site eventually needs. Installing a tracking pixel is the most requested of them. What is API integration? is the plain-English explainer for the moment a third-party service has to talk to your site, and the API integration hub sets out why that matters even if you never write a line of code yourself.
